Unsure why she was invited because she wasn’t invited to the actual wedding, yet curious all the same, Nora accepts the invite. However, the bachelorette party is for her ex-best friend Clare, who she hasn’t spoken to in ten years. In a Dark Dark Wood is a story about a young woman named Nora who attends a bachelorette party in a cabin in-you guessed it!-a dark, dark wood. The June pick is In a Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware, and this is my book review! If you like suspense, you’ll like this book.At the beginning of the year, I curated a Slanted Spines reading list for 2020, designating a book for each month. Whose blood is she covered in? The book is told in alternating chapters between the hen weekend and after the hen weekend with Nora being taken to the hospital afterwards covered in blood and injuries. Nora is uneasy at first with the group and her past with Clare, but it only gets worse as the past comes to the forefront and Clare’s obsessive friend starts going a little mad. At night the house is illuminated and feels like a stage with the woods watching their every move. The hen night is in an isolated house made of mostly glass in the woods (you guessed it… the dark, dark woods). Again, Ruth Ware is the master of suspense. Immediately you start off with a sense of foreboding that builds and builds until you can’t take it anymore. You don’t know the situation, but you obviously know that something bad is going to come of this. Right from the get-go you know it’s a bad idea for Nora to go to Clare’s hen night. Why would Clare invite her after all this time? Now as an adult, Nora gets a surprise invite to Clare’s hen night (aka Bachelorette party for those non-Brits out there) out of the blue despite having not spoken to Nora since they were teens. Clare was Nora’s best friend when they were kids, until Nora transferred schools and left everyone behind without any explanation. Nora is a writer who mostly keeps to herself, including pieces of her past that she’s not keen to revisit. I will admit that this was my least favorite of the three I read, but that does not mean anything because I still enjoyed it immensely. This is the third book that I’ve read by her and I have loved every single one.

She is a master of suspense and twisty tales. I don’t know how many times I can say this, but I absolutely adore Ruth Ware. Is this a chance for Nora to finally put her past behind her?Īnd in the dark, dark house there was a dark, dark room Until, out of the blue, an invitation to Clare’s hen night arrives. Not since Nora walked out of school one day and never went back.
